Natural resources field work has gotten a lot faster and easier with the advent of portable computing devices, satellite navigation technology and the wide availability of cellular communications services. We would be foolish if we didn’t employ these tools to the greatest extent possible. But it’s easy to become overreliant on flashy technology. A competent field worker knows the strengths and limitations of new equipment and methods, but also can fall back on more traditional approaches when those wonderful gadgets break down or aren’t up to the task at hand.
